EXCLUSIVE RECIPE: S'mores Hot Chocolate
A Gift for You!
The holiday season is in full swing and that means gifts! So I wanted to share with you an exclusive recipe from my upcoming Christmas Sweets e-book, coming out on Monday December 16!
I love creating sweet treats that are secretly healthy, so this whole e-book is filled with delicious holiday sweets that are way better for you than the traditional versions!
Today's recipe is one of my newest faves, and my kids are loving it too!
S'mores Hot Chocolate!
A Fun Twist to a Winter Favorite
When the weather turns a little cooler, it is the perfect time for a cozy hot chocolate. I wanted to have a little fun with my hot chocolate and come up with some different flavors to add to it.
I had recently been to San Diego, where my friend, Kathleen, had taken me to a really cool cafe called S3. They serve the most amazing coffee drinks that are decorated in such a beautiful way.
Inspired by this cafe, I wanted to top my S'mores Hot Chocolate with marshmallows. Kathleen suggested toasting the marshmallows first, and I thought that was a genius idea!
Toasting the marshmallows takes a little bit of extra time, but it is so fun to get the kids involved in doing this part.
A Low Sugar Hot Chocolate
To make this hot chocolate with less sugar, I opted to use monkfruit sweetener . I love monkfruit sweetener because it is a natural source of sweetness, doesn't elevate blood sugars and actually has been shown to help keep blood sugars stable.
Obviously, the marshmallow does contain lots of sugar, so if you're trying to reduce your sugar intake, you may want to opt for something different than the marshmallow. The drink will still be amazing though!
I'll Have S'more
To really play up the flavors of s'mores, to the basic hot chocolate recipe I added the flavors of graham crackers, namely cinnamon and vanilla. These two flavors really make the hot chocolate taste like s'mores! When my daughter, Olivia, first tasted the S'mores Hot Chocolate recipe, she said, "Wow! This really does taste like s'mores!"
But, the ultimate topping for this S'mores Hot Chocolate is the toasted marshmallow. As the marshmallow melts into the hot chocolate, the drink truly reminds me of eating s'mores with a melted, ooey, gooey marshmallow inside.
The flavor of this hot chocolate is so addictive! You won't want to stop at just one cup!
I hope you love this recipe! If you give it a try, snap a photo and tag me on social media at nourish_with_renata on IG or Facebook. I'd love to see what you make!
And make sure to keep an eye out for the Christmas Sweets e-book coming out on Monday December 16!
S'mores Hot Chocolate
All your favorite s'mores flavors in a hot chocolate!
- 2 cups milk of choice
- 1 tsp cocoa powder
- 3 tsp monkfruit sweetener, (or more to taste)
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 large marshmallows
- Gold sugar, ( if desired)
-
In a small pot, add the milk, cocoa powder, monkfruit sweetener, ground cinnamon and vanilla extract.
-
Heat the pot over a medium heat, while whisking to ensure all the ingredients fully dissolve into the milk.
-
Heat till the hot chocolate is piping hot, whisking occasionally to prevent a skin forming on the milk.
-
Pour the hot chocolate into 2 mugs.
-
Skewer large marshmallows and toast on an open flame such as a gas burner, being careful not to burn yourself. You can also do this under the broiler in the oven - just be careful about the marshmallows sticking to your oven tray!
-
Top your S'mores Hot Chocolate with a large, toasted marshmallow and enjoy immediately! Sprinkle on a little gold sugar, if desired. Best served with a spoon.
