Fig Newton Protein Balls

A Childhood Favorite

Did you ever have Fig Newtons as a kid?

I distinctly remember my first bite of a Fig Newton. That sweet chewy filling was so flavorful, sweet, chewy and oh so delicious! I had to have another bite! The crumbly soft dough on the outside made it absolutely delectable.

I wanted to make an updated version of Fig Newtons but with a higher protein content. Enter the Fig Newton Protein Balls!

Fig Newton Protein Balls

These Fig Newton Protein Balls are super easy to make. I love that the fig flavor is so bold, with a hint of vanilla and a little crunch from the almonds.

These protein balls are awesome for snacks and even better as a treat in lunch boxes too.

You could even have your kids help you form the balls and roll them between their hands. Getting your kids involved in cooking not only teaches them about how to cook, but also gives them a sense of ownership in the food, which usually helps them want to eat and finish their food!

Inspired by the childhood fave, Fig Newtons, these protein balls have the same flavors but more protein, crunch and deliciousness!

  • 1 cup figs, soaked in warm water for 10 mins then drained
  • 1/2 raw almonds
  • 2 tbsp vanilla protein powder
  1. In a high powered blender or food processor, add the figs and blend till a thick paste or a ball forms.
  2. Add the almonds to the high powered blender or food processor and blend till the almonds break up and are incorporated into the figs.
  3. Add in the protein powder and blend once more. If not getting good mixing, turn the dough out into a separate bowl and mix in the protein powder. The dough should stick together when pinched.
  4. Scoop tablespoons of the dough and roll into balls. Store the Fig Newton Protein Balls in an airtight container for up to one week.
